Cutting wedding program fan

Post by rainbow82 »

Hi All

I found a SVG on the internet, I took the text off and I tried to trace it, but it will not trace no matter what I do. I tried played with it for over 1 hour. I tried doing it in Inkcape then when that did not work directly in SCAL. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I watched youtube videos, I read help guides, I am at a loss.

I have not used my SCAL in a long time, so I am not sure if I need to upgrade something. Last time I used it it worked fine. Can someone please help me or give me another direction to go in. Other then that I am going be cutting out 450 fan pieces by hand!

I think this is what you intended. A google search came up with what looked like your template.

The template is designed to 4 blades at one time and then you assemble them together. If this is the right one, e can work from there.

See if this is what your want. You can cut 4 per 12x12 sheet of cardstock.

I don't know how you want to add the text. You say that you haven't used SCAL for awhile so I'm guessing that you have SCAL2 so do you know how to add text for print to cut?

why were you tracing an SVG?
just import it into scal or use a inkscape plugin to send it to scal?

Gaz, You are correct in that you don't trace an svg but this file was not properly constructed for svg cutting. If you imported the svg file into SCAL2 or eCal you would see that there are a ton of line segments not connected. SCAL2 doesn't like them and eCal only does a fair job wth them. It would not union in SCAL2 and did a poor job in eCAL. It would not union in Inkscape either. the only answer was to reconstruct a whole element.

In ecal it would do a Union but this is the result.

I hope this helps some, new or old to figure out why not all svgs work in SCAL

Ah, I always (well 99.999%) open in inkscape, I tend to use Scal3 as I would a printer driver, except for a small, last minute edit if I forget something (like forgetting to add/remove a dash line)

if I can't union all the bits as in this file I would just fill the shape with colour (bucket fill) and then use that as the svg, deleting the outside (stroke)
the shape may be a little smaller but svg can be resized so not a bit problem and it's only by a small amount that you'd not really notice.

using the OP files I get this after using the paint bucket/bucket fill (stroke no fill)

Blue is the first file, red the 2nd.
I then don't have to worry about union at all as each blade is a individual object, I could group them if I wanted.

Thanks Gaz, I did use the paint bucket to get the elements together.

For those of you who don't know how to use the paint bucket see Cleversomeday's video's and tutorials for everything you need to know about using the paint bucket.
