SCAL5 with a cricut maker

Post by trisch@bresnan.net »

Hi there -

Just bought SCAL5 and can't find any info on how to use it with a Cricut Maker machine. Anyone have any idea's, tricks, etc. I tried uploading text and it was so pixelated I couldn't clean it up enough to use it. I am using Design Space beta 5.2 (the newest version) :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Since ProvoCraft, the maker of Cricuts, legally forbids any 3rd party software from communicating directly with their cutters, you'll need to export your files as SVG from SCAL and then import that SVG file into Design Space for cutting. To do that, create your design in SCAL5, then go to File>Export, provide a name and note where you are saving the file. Then, in the next window, mark the box for Design Space compatible (just that box, not the others).

If you need help learning the many design functions in SCAL, here is a link to the detailed user manual I've written for SCAL5:

Feel free to post more questions, as you have them.

I am interested in purchasing SCAL5 so avoid resizing issues w Design Space for native SVG files. I am unable to test w Demo software if i can download either created or purchased SVG file for machine appliqué (i.e. KImberbell files) into SCAL5 and then download for use w Cricut/Design Space and have the file size remain intact. Has anyone tested this? I do not want to purchase this software if it is unable to do this. Some files, esp appliqué files are very size sensitive and makes it very difficult to manually resize in software. Thanks.

This was a very hot topic a month ago on the various SCAL Facebook groups. First, Cricut made a change in Design Space that messed up the SVG export sizing option in SCAL. The developer of SCAL quickly fixed it and issued a SCAL update but then there was problem with that update not reimporting SVG files back into SCAL. THEN, another SCAL update corrected that issue. As far as I know from following multiple SCAL Facebook groups daily, the issue is completely resolved at this point. Of course, who knows what Cricut might do next. lol
