Do we need to pay for each upgrade?

I was curious if we have to pay for each upgrade as they come out. Or is it like other software one you buy upgrades are free.

When the main version number changes every few years (4 years the last time) then there's a fee to upgrade which is about half the cost of buying it new. Otherwise, as small updates and changes are made, the upgrades are all free. Thus, for example, with version 4, there were 78 updates to it that were all free over those 4 years. With Version 5, there have been 19 updates so far in the past 15 months and they have all been free.
