SCAL V5 nesting feature failed on my MAC

Post by alvan »

Did several test, if I type some letters, and go to nest, click the ungroup box, than all letter mess up and go beyond the mat...I think it is a bug. But if I ungroup it first, and then go to nest, it works. Please check it, Is it more compatible with windows?

That's how it is supposed to work. When you ungroup text, the letters become individual shapes and the Nesting feature will rearrange the shapes to take up the least amount of material for cutting... which is the purpose of the Nest function. When the letters are not ungrouped, then they are considered to be a single object and will remain together. Note that if you are nesting words and you do not want them rotated, then in the Nest window, set Max Rotations to 0.

More details on the Nest function can be found in my detailed SCAL5 UM at this link:

I know, but in the nest pop up windows, there is also an ungroup box can checked, if I the words not ungroup before, and check this box, it will result in misplacement even the preview is correct. You can try it. Please check the attached screenshot.

I was able to reproduce that bug. However, if you ungroup the shapes BEFORE going to the Nest window, then that bug does not occur. Or if you Ungroup AFTER leaving the Nest window, then the bug doesn't occur. I will report this to SCAL's developer but in the meantime, it seems that it would make sense, based on the purpose of the function, to ungroup shapes before entering that window, yes? If you have a specific example of when you wouldn't be able to Ungroup before nesting, feel free to post it.

I am using SCAL pro 5 and as soon as I go to Effects --> Nest the program crashes (shuts down). I had to manually rearrange the shapes to fit them all in, but it would be great if this feature actually worked. I am working on a Mac Mini with Mac OS Catalina 10.15.4 and everything is up-to-date.

Getting my work back is another issue--it doesn't "recover" despite the message that says it recovered work when the computer crashed.

Please note that Help>Check for Updates is broken so the only way to know with absolute certainty that you're on the latest SCAL5 version is to actually go to the following link and ignore what it shows as the latest version but rather JUST download it and the correct version number will be in the file name. Install it and try again. Before trying, please take a screenshot of your shapes and post here in case the same thing happens so that I can see what is being sent to the Nest window. Thanks!
