Trying to cut perferations

Post by msimpson »

I am trying to do some project templates. These will be used to mark drill points on various pieces of stock.

I'm using 65lb card stock. I draw the marks using a pen in tool #2 (Cameo 3). A blade is set in tool #1 and I have been cutting out the template. This works fine on large templates, but I have some templates where several will fit on a 8.5" x 11" sheet. Its a real pain to peel each one. I want to make perforations so that I can remove the template from the sheet at a later date.

Here is my problem.

I have selected the template outline rectangle where I would normally cut them and added a custom perforation. There are a couple problems with this.

1. While they look good in SCAL 4 even under preview, this is not the case once you go into the cutter. The lines dont fully make it around the rectangle. This can be a little or a lot depending on the kinds of perforations you are making.
2. When cutting the perforations the cutter jumps all over the place it will cut a tiny single perforation line then jump to another whole line then come back. The cutting is just all over the place and not acceptable as its adding several minutes to the cut.

As it stands, I can not use SCAL 4 with my Cameo 3 to make these templates and am having to go back to Silhouette Designer to do so. I want to use SCAL 4 as I will eventually be using a KNK Force to make these templates.

Anyone have a better way of cutting the perforations?

Windows 7 w SCAL 4.067
Silhouette Cameo 3 Blade in #1, Pen in #2
65lb card stock on stock mat

Note the templates turn out perfect when they are simply cutout.

When you say you added a custom perforation, does that mean you didn't create it using the Line Style setting on the Fill & Stroke Panel?

No I just meant I did not choose one of the defaults. I did make it with the Fill and Stroke Panel.

Here I have included a pic of what the Cameo 3 will output.

I don't know of a solution using the Line Style setting for this other than by trial and error... tweaking the dash length and spacing to see if you can get a more even result.

If it were me, I would use Object on Path instead. Create a line and then select it and your rectangle and go to Effects>Object on Path. Note that you want to check the Warp setting:

Just did the object on path thing and it did exactly the same thing as just adding the line perfs to the rectangle. It still did not finish the path. I suspect the jumping around when it is cut has a lot to do with the way the individual items are sorted. There is no sorting option so its just a through of the dice how they individual cuts are going to be done.
