from a plastic jar? I just used Goo Gone and now that's all I can smell and even after washing the jar with soap and water, there is still an adhesive residue.

Well, since you have the worst of it off, maybe rubbing alcohol, or mineral spirits.

I use WD 40 on glass, not sure how it would work on plastic.

WD 40 works great for this. I sprayed two labels and I let them sit. After about 30 minutes, I peeled the labels right off. Woo Hoo. Thanks Hellieoh!

I also use white vingar on a paper towel or soft cloth and it removes easily!

I use orange oil. It comes in a smallish plastic bottle here in Australia... orange in colour of course! It takes off labels very easily when applied with a cloth or paper towel.
I hope you can find some in your location as it definitely is a good product and does not leave any nasty smells.
