Those are the steps you take. You have to make sure the text box is selected. It will have a dotted box around it and arrows. Since you are trying to weld a word, you should type it in one box. There are two ways to move the letter together.
1) Use Alt+< to move all the letters at one time
2) To fine tune the letters so that some won't be too overlapped while others haven't touched at all, put the cursor between the letter too far apart and press Alt + (left arrow).
3) Using the large black arrow at the top of the icons to select the text, click on Path>Object to Path
4) Still selected, Path>Union

Save as .svg file. Once you open in SCAL, you can tell if it is welded.
Doin the Bug...ain't nothin wrong if you wanna do da Bug all nite long...

Thank you. Today, it seems to be working. I can't figure out why, or wht I did differently. But I'll take it!
