Why all the white space?

I wanted to cut some letters that are 5.5 inches tall. I have the baby bug, so I know this is possable. When using CDS, if you pick 5.5 inches tall, it makes the letter that tall. When I tried this is SCAL the letter only comes out 4.5 inches tall, with white space above and below the letter. The size of the letter and the amount of white space vary depending on which font I use.

Anyone have any idea why?

The only white space I know about is that dingbats and fonts have extra space around them - this is so that when you type in other programs, like Word, the letters have the appropriate amount of height built in above and below the letters. I posted an item on the wish list, asking for the ability to move the image around - even outside of the limitations of the mat size... that way I can drag the image up and eliminate the white space. I hope this helps.
