Welding Letters

I just finished watching the tutorial on how to weld letters. Although there are 3 ways to do this I am unable to weld letters through ungrouping them and dragging them. I am able to use the arrows on my keyboard but not my mouse. Am I doing something wrong? Or is there an easier way to weld letters together?
