I am trying to take a picture of a college logo into Inkscape so I can cut it on SCAL. I have tried the tutorials and I can't get letters to show up. I can't find the magnifying glass with the red circle in it. I can't get the slippers to be black, they stay in a double line. Is there some one that could give me some pointers. I am really frustrated and feeling really stupid. Thanks for any help you can suggest.

Don't feel stupid. INK has a learning curve and there are steps that you take for one type of image that you don't need for another.
I can try to help. I can assume you have traced the image in INK (sorry, I don't know what magnifying glass with red circle you are referring to).
You said that the slippers are in double line...have you used the Path>Break Apart command? If so and you still see the double lines, are you in the outline mode? 1)Path>Break Apart 2) View>Outline. Doing this will break the image apart so you can delete the double line but in the outline mode you will not be able to see any color that has been applied (only in Normal View will you see color).
Now, are you using letter from an image or typing in INK. In INK, you have to use the Text command...A on the menu down the left side or F8. Click and start typing. You will be typing in whatever font is default. To change, you have to go the T along the top menu and change from there. After you get the words you want, you have use the Path>Object to Path command.

Susan Bluerobot has some great tutorials on her web site. Just type in Susan Bluerobot in your Windows search engine and you can find it that way. Plus she has patterns you can download! I am struggling with Inkscape also so you are not alone. Sometimes I think I will never figure it out. Keep trying and don't give up. Good luck!

I just found this on either this forum or Susan's blog. I am going to check it out and see if it helps.

I went to screencasters and poked around and found this:
http://www.microugly.com/inkscape-quickguide/
I'm printing it out right now!
It is the clearest list of what the tools are and how they work I've seen. Just browsing through them I learned so much. Give it a look!
