Purpose of Inkscape???

Post by jfricker »

What is the purpose of Inkscape? I don't really need it do I if I have Adobe Photoshop?
What do you all do with it?

I just purchased SCA yesterday and have "played" a little.

I am having trouble with the paper tearing. I changed settings and it helped a little. I just need to work with SCA some more.

Also, I am wondering what the the box that shows the font and all those little squares/rectangulars, etc are for. What does it do? (Not the box that lists the fonts)

Any helpful hints will be greatly appreciated.

Inkscape is a program that allows us to be more creative with our designs cut in SCAL. SCAL's newest release included welding etc. so before that, we had to weld in Inkscape. It is an excellent program.

The square/rectangle boxes in the Shape Table. In a font file, each element has a respected place...one dingbat might be created by pressing "a" while another dingbat might be created by pressing "!". On the Shape Table, if there is no element in that space, nothing is there so instead of leaving it blank, there are boxes...not sure why.

My question is do I need it?
I have Adobe Photo shop, but i do not enjoy creating things. I use it for digital scrapbooking, editing pictures etc.

If the only thing Inkscape is used for is to create items, then I don't need it??????

But, if I can open things up in it and save it as an svg file, then it would be a program I would use.

Hopefully those of you who are using it can enlighten us on what you are doing with it.

Hi Joan,
You may not need it, but I do... I use it to make and save the files as a .dxf so I can send them to my daughter to cut on a xyron wishblade. The creators of this program have been so very generous to share as there are so many people who can't afford a graphic program like AI. Also my daughter has a cricut and it allowed her to draw and design some nice cutouts. Her wishblade is my old machine that I passed to her. Now she has been using the cricut again and it is helpful when you are in need of pumping out a lot for favors and the like. Running 2 maching can make quick work of a large job. So its not really that one would need inkscape its more like you want it. What ever you decide just enjoy the cutting and remember Inkscape is a freebie.

If you have Adobe Illustrator you may not need Inkscape... These programs allows you to export the graphics to SVGs which you can import to SCAL...

My friend has created me some SVG files in Illustrator. The psd file opens just fine in Adobe Photoshop. When I import them in to SCA, the files shows up to click on, but nothing appears on the screen. What are we doing wrong?????

Thanks so much for any help.

Yes, she saved it as an SVG file. But, when I import it there is nothing there? More than likely, it is something I am doing wrong...

Hi,
I am well versed in Illustrator, and I had the same thing happen when I saved an .svg file from Illustrator and opened it in SCAL. Haven't tried all the options that Illustrator CS2 has for saving the .svg. Does anyone know if there is a particular version of .svg that's required? I had saved it as 1.1.
Thanks,
Deb
