Floating nodes

Since upgrading to Inkscape 92.3, my nodes float when I try to move them. I know I should be able to set them in "Preferences" but haven't figured out which one to tick. Also now get "cusp node to cusp node which is driving me crazy. How can I fix this? The Inkscape manual is all Greek to me. I've been using Inkscape for years.
