SCAL4 does not work with any Cricut machines. If you don't want to use the Cricut Design Space and can still return the Cricut your best option would probably be a different machine.

Did you convert the text to Path? It won't show up in eCAL if you don't. My versions of Inkscape and eCAL1 seem to work better if I use Path/Union on the text rather than Path/Convert to Path. HTH

If your original image has broken lines, you will need to join them. I have a tutorial on how to do this here. If the original image has solid lines, but not completely black, it might help to adjust the trace settings. I have a couple of basic trace tutorials here.
