Since there is a SCAL 4 version now available, that might be the reason you're getting the notices about update being available... not sure, however. Two things: The latest download should actually be 4.059 even though the site says 4.058. So maybe upgrade again. To avoid that happening, try using Object>Ungroup on your text to separate the letters into individual shapes. Then select each letter individually before using the Stencil function.

With the Pro version, there is no theoretical maximum length. However, practically, you need to know the ins and outs of cutting extremely long lengths of a material before diving in.

Start with your frame which you can create by making two rectangles and then applying Object>Merge to remove the interior.
Arrange your flourishes so that they overlap the interior edge of the frame and each other. Then select everything and apply Path>Union.

SCUT is the original file format for Sure Cuts a Lot. In other words, you can use File>Open to open any scut file.
