I still can't get it to cut... Anyone? Hurray! I got it!

I have been working on this for a week for my niece. I think she now finds me hopeless. I am hoping someone can help me to get this to cut? Any pointers would help, please? I have attached a new file that now has a million nodes, still don't know how to get it to cut without taking an hour...?

I never even get the box to open. I open the inkscape program. Click File, import and the image. Then have my pointer tool selected with the bars around the image. Click path and trace bitmap and then nothing. I even used images that I have coverted and saved before, but it will not do anything with...

It does have some contrast. I am not able to get my path-trace bit map to work with any image that I import. It is a jpg file that I am trying to trace. I cannot upload it here because it is too big.

Can anyone help me with my inkscape image. It seems that no matter what image I put in if I select the item, then Path and trace bitmap, it does nothing? I have it working a couple months ago, now nothing.
