The paint bucket tool is great for this. Towards the end this video shows how to use it when there are gaps.

The best way to do this is to go to dafont.com and type in your word in the custom preview box and then you can scroll through the categories quickly and see what catches your eye.

Heres an old trick we used to use before SCAL had a way to see font names. Open a copy of the scut2 file in a text editor like word pad and look through the code for the font name. Search for the word "font" and it should be near there. Or in your case you might want to search for the word...

wikimedia also has many sports logos in svg format. It is usually the first link that comes up in a google search.
