Did you select Cutter -> Mat Size -> 12x24 from the SCAL menu in addition to using the 12x24 physical mat?

I usually set my pressure at the highest or next to highest setting and the blade housing setting to the highest or next to highest. Try using another USB port if you have one. Shut everything down - computer and Cricut. Plug the Cricut into another USB port. Turn all on and try again. You might have to install USB drivers again.
